Every once in a while, I mention to wife about going to Ukraine to live.

She always reminds me how upset I get at the crappy level of retail service there, so I wouldn't last much more than a couple of months.

Getting good prescription drugs would be a serious problem also.

Wife says that certain services have improved a lot compared to 10+ years ago.
Particularly in banking.  Tellers and branch managers now more customer friendly compared to their prior attitude of . . . we are doing you a favor by even talking to you.

And now there are a lot of private medical clinics . . . for pay of course, that are more attentive than the government clinics.

But in large department stores and grocery stores, still crappy.
e.g. Where can I find a certain type of shirt ?
Clerk:  Look around yourself.

And small shops also.
e.g. I would like just a couple of slices of that ham.
Clerk: I can't be bothered with that.

Even with the horrible war in Ukraine right now, personally I am more optimistic for Ukraine’s future than for Belarus unfortunately. Belarus might have one small chance again if ruzzia disintegrates, even if temporarily. Which is unlikely.

Lucky you! I went to Crimea several times in summer while in college with my friends, but have never been to Odessa, always wanted to go!
My son’s nanny is from Odessa, she raised him since he was 3 months old(he is almost 9 now). We have become a family through all these years together. Unfortunately her American husband passed away almost two year ago and she made a decision to return to Odessa in March 2024, she has close  family there. We talk daily and she is coming over to stay with us and vacation together this winter. The plan is for her to purchase a permanent home  and for us a dacha nearby when the war is over.

I don't believe in verbally abusing anyone particularly if no antagonism from another party. However, I believe people should be allowed to live in a way they are comfortable with. It's why I made a post a few months ago about wouldn't everyone be happier living in communities they were comfortable in, in theory, rather than necessarily by country destination, etc. So gays innan all gay community, those that want a mixed community in an all mixed community, etc, etc.

I myself am more concerned with how I am getting on thaj being pre-occupied with racial, sexuality and other stuff. Most people I think are probably the same, unless a civil war is at hand they would rather just get on and try and have a life than have that disrupted with a load of antagonism over these issues. While the guy in question possibly didn't know the area he was surveying in and the types of people that lived there and shouldn't have really gotten abuse for being in those parts I would say that I can understand that not all people wish to accept what the government may wish them to accept.

Shadow here is willing to go to Russia to avoid the multi racial community, that's on a backdrop of many in the Netherlands voting for Geert Wilders who is anti-muslim immigration. So he is not alone among Dutch people feeling that way, whether Wilders can do anything without an absolute majority is another matter. In the UK we have a similar situation to the Netherlands, a growing Muslim population and things aren't the way they used to be, there has long been ethnic minority populations since the 1950s but now they seem to be growing in size. Where that will end up who knows, possibly the Muslims may take control of the UK and we'll all have to follow Islam with white people becoming the minority and possibly being treated badly for it. No one seems to want to do anything for fear of being labelled racist and as said above concentrate on their own lives.

Potentially Ukraine could be a pleasant place away from all of that in the future. Maybe or maybe not. I think you are right Krim that not staying in one country permanently might be the right way to go. For me avoiding cold punishing winters would probably be the way to go for me We'll see, but I still would not see Russia as the place to be with the current leadership over there, just way too risky that idyllic life there could turn sour at any moment for many reasons.
