back in the good ole days the bigger Casinos in Reno/Sparks would have seafood buffets on Friday (mirroring the Catholic Lent tradition)

the Reno public library wasn't too bad, the public is also allowed access to the libraries at UNR Reno on the North end of Virginia Ave

if you're ever in Lake Tahoe at night, or further west, the night sky is FULL of stars, becuz no light pollution
sometimes there are so many stars out you can almost read from it
take an average pair of binoculars and look up, you will be in shock at what you can see which is normally totally hidden from you

Actually my husband has a gun, he has had it for years. I don't know where it is but he likes to drive to desert with his telescopes to spend the night and likes to take a gun with him.
Next to our house there is open space with trails and I always hear people shooting guns there when I walk the dog

re: polar vortex, no this year there is no snow in Reno at all for some reason! Only above 8000 feet!
Previous years there was so much snow that our gorgeous maple tree got split in half due to the weight of snow on branches and we constantly shoveled snow all 3 of us!

you also need to get what's known as a pinpoint detector
plenty of Utube videos, even a couple in Rye Patch itself to introduce the hobby and the area to ya
Peavine Mountain was another close by area to detect for "placer gold" found less there but only in one ravine ya gotta search for info online to find

this is a way to sort of medidate out in nature
and then when ya find some gold, and reflect on where it came from and how it got there fer you to pick up
makes ya feel all warm and cozy

Some years ago UW wife and I rented a large RV and drove from Denver to Los Angeles hitting all the hot spots along the way.

Then up to Sequoia, over to coast, up to San Francisco, over to Lake Tahoe, and then . . .

took the desolate Highway 50 east across Nevada heading for Zion Park.

Probably saw less than 10 cars in that drive across Nevada.  Highway was in great shape due to (relative) lack of usage.

I've driven it all the way to utah, most of the way at 100 mph (with long range radar detector)
the limestone beds in the "Great Basin" are packed with fossils
and they're everywhere there, cuz central nevada was once an inland sea
and there were monsters livin there

a whole string of old mining towns that are borderline ghost towns
along with actual ghost towns
for being in America, I thought it was pretty cool
but Crimea blew it away
if only I had a good FPV drone when I lived there.....

I'll know in the next 6 months if I'll ever be returning to Russia

otherwise a few hour flight from Simpheropol, but with all the overhead of airports, yur not that much ahead time wise
and on the train, you can isolate yurself, better than you can on a plane, which post-covid is a plus for me

Nicest trip I took via rail in Ukraine was the Grand Carriage from Kyiv to Lviv with reservations at the Grand Hotel in Lviv. This was back when there were no 5-star hotels in Ukraine. The Lviv Grand was a gem and their rail service was first-class as well.

The only thing about taking trains out of Ukraine is the long delay at the borders where they exchange the undercarriage of all the rail cars. Going to Warsaw from Kyiv as I recall was about a 4-hour stop at the border for the replacement process (may have been longer). Border control came aboard at that time to check everyone's travel documents.

Unlike most native Ukrainians, the rocking motion and constant clacking of the rail cars did not put me to sleep. Fortunately, I usually had company so sleep was not my highest priority.

Yes there was for sure a quota for accepting Jews to universities as there was already too many in science/art etc.
I went to a specialized Math school in Minsk where there were many Jewish kids and teachers.
