There are only a handful of common female names over there!

I've seen a number of profiles (mostly girls in their 20s) showing names like Zhanna and Zhanet, but I don't think it's a 'traditional' Russian name.

The Italian equivalent is Gianna, short for Giovanna, the feminine version of Giovanni (derived from Hebrew Jochanan, Arabic يحيى, Aramaic Yohanun) and corresponding to English John, German Johann, French Jean, Spanish Juan, Portuguese Jão, Greek Iannis, etc. which should be Ivan in Russian.

Not all languages have a feminine equivalent.  Is there an Ivan(n)a in Russian ?

Yes, Ivanna, Ivana and also Ivona ,  but the name used not so often.

Ivan or (Ioann) originated from Biblical Hebrew name Yochanan that means "Yahweh's mercy" English equivalent is name John.

Russian Zhanna is French Jeanne (a female name that also originated from Hebrew Yochanan)

I had that impression. BTW, Ivano/Ivana are also used in Italian, equally unfrequently except possibly in the Emilia/Romagna region (capital Bologna), with a long left-wing tradition and a marked penchant in post-war years for improbable feminine names like Rivoluzione, Barricata, Avvenire, etc. ;)

I was told Evgenia was the Russian version. You have the diminutive versions of Zhenya and Zhenka for example.
Take time to learn the language. Even a little can go a long ways...

Get off your butt and go! Don't make excuses why you can't do it, find a way to make it work! Always go with a backup plan too!!!

I doubt it, Evgenia is from Greek Eυγενη (well-borne, noble), no connection with St. John ;).

myrddin,

I'm late to the party but I have to say that I enjoyed your story immensely - I was trying to read yours. Taz' and SK reports concurrently so that I read one day of each before moving on but yours was far too engaging and I dropped the others.  ;D

BTW, you said you were planning a trip this month.... any updates?

Oh, you had to go and say that, huh?  I thought I was out!  ;)  Seriously, thanks for the kind words.

I returned to the US on the 2nd.  Between work, the trip, and even more work, I’ve been forced away from the board for several weeks.

It may have been cruel to deprive people of my glittering witty repartee, or perhaps it is cruel to return now and subject everyone to more of my obnoxious ramblings.  :P   Either way, "I’m not dead yet".

My first TR (which I consider complete) ran nearly 14 pages - some of it is commentary, but I accept responsibility (and/or blame) for most of that verbiage.  I’d guess it’s among the longest reports.  My second TR will be among the shortest.  Here it is:

We met in Kiev and went to Turkey.
   It was very good.

Then it got bad. Her family had health issues, communication was difficult.
   But things are okay.

   It got very good again.
   We went back to Kiev.
Saying goodbye was as difficult as I had both hoped and feared before I left.

I may be able to offer more details when I discover an extra hour or two hiding in that “24” each day taunts me with.

Yes, Myrddin, when are you going back? Who are you planning to see again? With who are you still in contact from those ladies?

Is lady C your most favorite? Maybe i missed it, but I didn't get who you liked the most at the end among those 4-5 women and who you would like to date exclusively? Maybe you are not at that point yet, are you?...  ;)

I am planning to go back in a few months (and wow, that planning time passes quick!)

After the first trip I was talking to Ladies E, C, and A.  Lady E essentially disappeared for reasons I still don't know.  Ladies C and A are both making excellent cases, and I'd say I'm "not at that point yet"  ;)  I will say that it's a heckuva problem to have.  (Soon I might start using less annoying pseudonyms here, though.   ;) )

I'm glad it's working out for you. :) And yes, please start using normal pseudonyms; for the life of me I can't which lady is which. :D

Hm, I see a warning that it's been more than 30 days.  But I don't know if I can "commit" to a real TR this time, which is what starting a new topic implictly suggests.

I've been in Ukraine more than a week, mostly in Dnepr.  It's been quite a ride (there is a Chinese curse: may you live in interesting times). I am not certain how much I can hang out on RWD - sorry but I've got better things to do!   ;D

Today I am not certain I completely recognize the person who wrote this TR.  I do not know what's going to happen from here, and I may not yet fully understand everything that's happened so far.  But I once read advice that said: Imagine that everything was planned out for the best, even if it's hard to believe. And figure out what you're supposed to learn from it.  We'll see.

My Russian has improved dramatically, but for some reason I cannot hear numbers properly.  Maybe my lessons had bad accents.  And one thing that remains is my naturally bad timing: I landed in Kiev less than 24 hours after it hit 9 or even 10 griven to the dollar (I'm told).  Right now 7.4 is good in Dnepr.  But I'm not the type to go on and on about things.  Anymore  ;D
